Mild. Highs in the 50s and low 60s most days. A handful of freezing mornings. Heating bills are low — the heat barely runs most weeks. Snow is rare and short-lived when it happens.
Horry County is predominantly USDA Hardiness Zone 8b on the updated 2023 map, with small inland edges in 8a. That means:
Palmettos, magnolias, live oaks, crape myrtles, camellias, and azaleas all thrive. Citrus (satsumas, kumquats) can be grown on the south end with light winter protection. A vegetable garden runs three seasons — lettuce and brassicas in winter, tomatoes and peppers in summer. Lawns are typically Bermuda, centipede, St. Augustine, or zoysia rather than the cool-season grasses you see north.
